Designed for beginners or those looking to improve their game, this dynamic experience combines learning key skills and playing a pickup game with inspiration from my athletic journey. • Start with a personal connection to Hermosa Beach’s vibrant volleyball culture as I share my professional journey as a player. • Learn the fundamentals of beach volleyball—serving, passing, setting, and spiking—through demonstrations and group participation. • Practice your skills with targeted drills, pairing up for serving and passing exercises before moving on to setting and spiking techniques. After a quick hydration break and Q&A session, put your new skills to the test in a friendly, coached pickup game in a low-pressure, fun environment— and leave Hermosa Beach with key takeaways to improve your future beach volleyball games.

Learn the art of pot painting using cochinilla dye

This creative & beginner-friendly workshop will take place in our backyard greenhouse patio, surrounded by fresh air and plants. Each participant will receive a unique & portable terracotta pot to paint & customize using a natural & locally-harvested Cochinilla Dye made from scratch by the shop's owner and founder, Andi Xoch, as well as a small plant to take home! We’ll begin with a fun introductory exercise & a brief history on our business & Cochinilla dye, which has ancient origins in the Americas. We’ll explain how to use the provided materials & show you some finished samples; as we guide you through the design & painting process, everyone will get an opportunity for one-on-one tips as you sketch your ideas & dive into painting. While our pots dry, we’ll answer any questions & share our favorite local spots around Boyle Heights, most within walking distance! You can also browse our shop's selection of plants, florals, & original artwork. All guests will receive a 20% discount. Once our pots are dry, each participant will get to choose a small beginner-friendly succulent to plant inside their pot to take home; these plants are the perfect travel companions, & shouldn't cause any stress on the way home! You’ll leave with a new awareness of a rich artistic tradition, an appreciation for Boyle Heights, and of course, your own custom potted plant to keep as a souvenir!

Skate in Venice Beach with Renowned Roller Dancer

Learn classic skate moves with me, a roller skate coach, tv/film skate talent, and cofounder of LA Roller Crew! Get an upfront view of some of the most iconic Venice Beach spots before the afternoon rush! Feel the pulse of Venice Beach’s unique blend of artistry, athleticism, and self-expression in a guided 120-minute session for all levels. Skates from Jay’s Rentals are included. • Meet at Jay's Rentals located at 1501 Ocean Front Walk ( a 1-minute walk past the Venice sign) to pick up your skates before heading to the Venice Beach Skate Dance Plaza, where I’ll share the history of the legendary skate plaza and surrounding area. Bring water to stay hydrated and sunscreen for protection while rolling in sunny SoCal. • Stretch and warm up on the grass before I guide you through essential roller-dance moves recognizable worldwide: the Downtown, the Crazy Legs, and the Grapevine. • Keep rolling! I’ll give you tips for the best places to keep skating until your skates are due back at Jay's Rentals. *For skate rentals beyond 2-hour allotted time, additional fees will apply, and must be returned by 7pm. You’ll leave with improved skating skills, as well as an invitation to join local meetups and stay connected with the Venice skate community.
