Cumbia Jam & Workshop - dive into CDMX's music dna

Mexico City's DNA is full of music and cumbia is a key part of it. In this experience you’ll join a 2 hour jam to create your very own cumbia band and dive deep into Mexico's musical culture and connect with musicians from its live music scene. We'll start with a welcome session in Casa Pepe where you'll learn about the idols of Mexican cumbia and take a simple, yet effective, intro workshop into how to play a cumbia. Then, we'll head to Banana Media Studio whereyou'll dive into a semi guided jam that will turn the group (what will probably start as a punk-diy ensemble) into a fun cumbia band that is almost ready to release its first song, has a band name, created its very own dance-step and even has an album cover design ready for printing. At the end of the jam you'll also receive a recording of the song - so your friends believe that you actually did create a cumbia band in Mexico City. You'll also connect with a couple of musicians from the Latin Alternative music scene, who will be able to point you in the direction of the best events, parties and sites to discover Mexico City's music culture properly. The best thing of this jam is that's great for beginners, full time musicians and those mom and dads that are into music but haven't had an excuse to play in a live band for years. This tour is ideal for your first day in the city! We'll get to know the history of many of the most famous places such as the Palacio de Bellas Artes, impressive murals, and the cathedral, and we will also visit less touristy spots like old colonial houses, hospitals, and traditional candy stores, and get to know traditions that are still alive today. Plus, a perfect juice stop, and many, many fun facts. During the tour, we will talk about the specificities of the Historic Center, but also about the broader city, the Spanish conquest, catholicism, Mexica traditions, gastronomy, migration, prostitution, power, wars, poverty, popular religiosity, commerce, architecture, art, politics, and symbols that have made Mexico such a great and vibrant city.
